Unforgettable Autumn Getaways Near The Annexe

After a bustling summer here at The Annexe, we feel so fortunate to have welcomed guests from across the globe—places like the USA, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and, of course, the UK! Guests have stayed for varying lengths, from a few days to over a month. Now, as autumn settles in, stays tend to be shorter, offering a perfect opportunity to experience the season’s unique charm. Wondering what November has in store for visitors? Here are a few ideas for an unforgettable autumn getaway in our area.

Explore Historic Cities: Bath and Bristol

If you haven’t yet visited Bath, a day trip to this beautiful city is a must. With its iconic Roman baths, Georgian architecture, and inviting shops, Bath promises an enchanting experience. You can find a few curated suggestions for a day in Bath in a previous blog post.

Bristol, on the other hand, offers a dynamic and artistic vibe distinct from Bath. Wander through the historic Old City, take a scenic walk along the harbourside, visit the SS Great Britain, the magnificent cathedral, or follow a Banksy trail. Clifton and the Suspension Bridge are also worth exploring. In a future blog, I’ll dive into more day-trip tips for Bristol, but for now, both cities are easily accessible via Park and Ride buses—Landsdown for Bath and Brislington for Bristol.

Visit Quaint Villages and Stunning Landscapes

For a day of picturesque village-hopping, consider starting with Castle Combe. Known as one of England’s most beautiful villages, Castle Combe offers delightful walks, and the autumn colors here are breathtaking. From Castle Combe, drive about 30 minutes to the National Trust village of Lacock. This timeless village, with its lovely Abbey (famous as a filming location for Harry Potter scenes), is a perfect spot to explore. Choose from cozy pubs and tearooms to enjoy a meal or refreshment.

If time allows, a stop in Avebury is the ideal way to cap off your day. National Trust members can enjoy free parking here, and the ancient stone circle, dating back to prehistoric times, offers a special ambiance that’s truly memorable.

After a full day of exploring, return to the comfort of The Annexe, unwind, and perhaps end your evening with a meal at The Cross House Pub in Doynton—always a guest favorite! Do make sure to book, as it’s very popular.

There’s so much to enjoy for a couple of days at The Annexe this Autumn, and I’ll have more suggestions coming up, so watch this space!
